(Mother of God…)
Katherine and I saw a school of Doom Eels stripping down a carcass after our encounter with the shark. The Doom Eel is not a true eel, however; it is actually a species of lamprey. Lampreys are eel-like jawless fish, but the Doom Eel has evolved an actual set of jaws; these jaws are actually insect-like in appearance. They also have barbels near the mouth that act like "nostrils". It uses them to smell out its prey and then it will eat. This is highly effective, especially since the animal has very poor eyesight. So the Doom Eel, despite its name, is not really dangerous; it's simply a scavenger just like its jawless relatives.
